BCA News: Winter 2017
BIOCOMM 2017 Preview
Mark your calendars now to join the BCA for BIOCOMM 2017! We are returning to the west coast, Portland, Oregon, June 20-24, 2017. Our venue, the University Place Hotel, part of the Portland State University, is conveniently located on the light rail line with access to the entire city. The best part is we have negotiated a price of $104 per night, which includes breakfast every day!
You spoke – we listened. We have changed up the meeting focusing on feedback from our members. We’ve scheduled a pre-meeting photo excursion and workshop led by Matt Kloskowski. If you attended the BIOCOMM 2016 meeting you’ll remember Matt’s great workshop on Lightroom! Matt will take us to great locations around the Portland area, including waterfalls, and the Pacific shore. Matt will encourage experimentation, discovery, play, fun, and the open exchange of concepts, ideas, and techniques. We will come back to the hotel on the second day for viewing, critique and learning from each other. Matt will also present on our first day and give a plenary talk, which is not to be missed!
Our Maria Ikenberg-Lindberg Keynote speaker for 2017 is Jack Dykinga. If you were at BIOCOMM 2011 in Arizona and attended the photo workshop, you may recall photographing the Dykinga rocks, named for Jack. Jack will talk about his life’s work in photography and will dazzle us with his imagery, kicking off our meeting on a high note!
To end on another high note, our Anne Shiras Pioneer Lecturer will be George Lepp, who some of you may know. We thank Canon for sponsoring George who will cap off our meeting in spectacular fashion.
Between Matt, Jack and George we’re planning a three-day conference packed with a huge variety of topics ranging from Street Photography to Patient Photography Using a Mobile Device, 5D Imaging under the microscope - UV/IR, to Michael Peres’ Children’s book, and more! At present, we are waiting to finalize a few pieces of the puzzle and once completely set, we plan to post the full program in January for your planning purposes.
We will dedicate close to two hours of the meeting for Show-Us-Your-Stuff and InfoShare sessions. Show-Us-Your-Stuff, moderated by Bob Turner, are 15 minute presentations hallmarking images and techniques. While InfoShare, moderated by Jim Koepfler, are 5 minute informal presentations to share your problem-solving ideas, handy gadgets, or clever new ways of doing something. Let Jim know you would like to contribute and we’ll get you on the program!
So keep your eye on the BIOCOMM web page for the program and the registration form and sign up as soon as you can!
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Portland, Oregon, June 20-24th!
