BCA News: Spring 2016
David Bishop wins two Wellcome Image Awards
Congratulations to BCA member David Bishop from the UCL-Royal Free London Hospital, London, UK! Two of his images were selected along with 18 others as the 2016 Wellcome Image Awards winners.
The Wellcome Image Awards are the Wellcome Trust's most eye-catching celebration of science, medicine and life. The Awards recognize the creators of the most informative, striking and technically excellent images that communicate significant aspects of biomedical science.
David works for UCL Health Creatives and is based at the Royal Free London where he is the photography services manager. He is also a visiting lecturer for the University of Westminster on their BSc Clinical Photography course.
David's career as a medical photographer took some time to develop. After work experience at the North Middlesex Hospital in London at the age of 15, he had every intention of starting a career in Medical photography, however at 18 he was offered a job as a photographer with the Ministry of Defense and ended up staying for 22 years. The last 10 years were spent 'on the road' as a PR/corporate photographer working in the UK and abroad.
He subsequently joined the Medical Illustration department at the UCL Medical School (Royal Free Campus) in 2002 and in 2007 completed the Glasgow Caledonian BSc in Medical Illustration.
David specialises in PR / Corporate photography in healthcare and medical research.
I am very passionate about photography and the hospital environment has provided me with some really amazing and challenging opportunities. I have been able to use my skills as a PR photographer to image the healthcare environment for the clinician and the patient in many news articles, Trust publications, journals and magazines.
Photography is also my hobby and I relax by taking landscape and nature photographs throughout the UK.
